[Cat Power]posted by pete at 12:01I feel that I should say a few words about the spectacular Cat Power concert from last Wednesday night. Gee it was good.
I saw her play at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, but would have preferred to watch her in a theatre context. I think the style of her performance and the nature of her music would be more suited to that sort of venue. She is a shy performer, and played in a dark corner of the stage, seated at all times, with her hair all but covering her face. She chatted with people in the front rows, but unfortunately those of us further back couldn't hear what was being said.
But her voice is mesmerising. Her songs are gorgeous. Her backing musicians were great. However I would have loved to sit down. This is not music to dance to, and therefore after two hours standing, I was in agony.
Chan played songs from most of her albums, and also some covers and songs that I previously hadn't heard. Standouts for me included the luscious Satisfaction, a great rendition of Rockets and a terrific cover of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. She actually reinterpreted many of her album songs, which only added strength and interest to the performance.
It was a strange and unconventional concert, but all the more glorious and memorable because of this!

[Of the moment]posted by pete at 14:36Listening to Life's rich pageant. It's a perfect day for R.E.M. I can close my eyes and imagine myself in a college town.
