[:rethinking]posted by pete at 21:35Mind you, some of Squarepusher's tracks are exceedingly lame. You can't win 'em all I suppose.

[So long, angel of Harlem]posted by pete at 18:27I've never realised before that it's actually The Edge with the guitar on the cover of Rattle and Hum. For some reason I've always thought it was Bono, as illogical as that may be.

[Missing more]posted by pete at 22:45Tonight I'm missing the ...Trail of Dead + Mogwai concert, tomorrow night I'm missing Morrissey and probably James Lavelle too (although my arm might be twisted), and on Friday night I've been invited to the Crazy Penis concert... it is very unlikely that I'll attend. Potentially I'll catch The Borderers at the Gov on Friday, but it's too early to tell.
Lots of cool bands in one week (thanks to Livid in the Eastern states)... and I'm missing them all.

[Deserter]posted by pete at 21:40I'm missing the Mercury Rev concert. Right now, they are probably playing their wonderful music to an appreciative crowd, and I'm not amongst it. This is very sad for me. I just couldn't justify the ticket price, given my current financial situation. :(

[165 bpm]posted by pete at 15:14Back in 1997-1999, I went through a bit of a drum'n'bass/jungle phase. I never really got into the rave scene, but I liked the music. However, my preferences lay with the more ambient and 'intelligent' styles, where mutating beats skitter above rolling basslines, and string and synth sounds wash around somewhere in the mix, preferably with some semblance of melody. I bought compilation after compilation, often on a whim without actually listening to them (rather stupid), and always seemed to end up with 2-step or some other repetitive variation.
Why didn't someone just sit me down and reel off a list of names such as Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, Aphex Twin, Outside...? There's a whole host of excellent discs that I know about now. It's a pity that this knowledge came all a bit too late; my current obsession with folky/edgy/strange stuff doesn't leave a great deal of room for that tired electronic genre.

[Stereolab]posted by pete at 08:35I've found myself listening to Stereolab quite a lot during the past few days. Their Dots and Loops album is superb. I love their jangly 60s/70s feel, and the whole 'French chick singing' thing is always cool. Sometimes their tracks are a bit oversimplistic, ie. relying on a single chord of ambient warmth-noise, but they are very groovy on the whole.

[Yoshimi]posted by pete at 14:43Well I did it, I went out and bought Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips. I think the urge was induced by my recent playing of The Soft Bulletin. Having listened to the new disc a couple of times, I feel that I have every right to say that it is rather good: a new twist on their distinctive sound.
Also, it seems that Mercury Rev are coming to Adelaide. Clearly I need to investigate dates and ticket prices.

[Relative ways]posted by pete at 22:54Clinging to my last few weeks of university life, I've started listening to ...Trail of Dead. Just the odd track, here and there. I'm always a sucker for college favourites, and I've never even been to the US. Although if you read my travel section you'll see that I'm working on it. I like a good bit of art-noise. They don't quite reach Sonic Youth's levels of coolness (do they even live in Manhattan?), but they fulfil the odd urge for distortion and screams.
