[Music for films]

I've been listening rather obsessively to several tracks from the soundtracks to In the mood for love and Amelie. Over and over again.

Currently, I'm giving silverchair's Diorama a spin. It's good so far.

[How to win friends]

One thing's for sure – people are vastly appreciative when they receive the lovingly prepared gift of a mix tape or compilation CD. Dishing out my Groovy compilations, numbers 1 to 6, has brought untold happiness to the lives of a few select friends. In my experience, people are reluctant to look the free music gift horse in the mouth.

[Coma music]

Here's an interesting one: Beajaye has developed a concept known as 'coma music' – in which you have to choose 5 albums that you'd want to have played to you while you're lying in a coma in the hope that they would trigger some brainwave to wake you up and make you sing. So they're not necessarily your favourite albums of all time, they're just ones that you can belt out a rendition of at the drop of a hat. You might even include ones that you really hate.

There are reasons for five:
- the hospital will only give you a 5-CD changer
- it will be on repeat for a whole day, until someone visits you to change it the next day

Mine are:

-U2, The Joshua tree
-Cat Power, The covers record
-PJ Harvey, Stories from the city, stories from the sea
-Joni Mitchell, Court and spark
-Radiohead, OK Computer

This, naturally, is subject to change.

[Beth]

And now I own Central Reservation and Daybreaker. In addition, I have gotten the delightful Deb to place Moon Pix on order for me. Thus, my |Beth Orton + Cat Power| mission is nearly complete!

After this I need to chill out on the music buying. Although I didn't realise that The Flaming Lips have a new CD... it's called Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and I'll obviously have to buy it.

[As promised]

I have just procured Trailer Park by Beth Orton, which is a good start. (See below!)

[Need]

After tonight's Internet session I'm convinced that I need to buy every single Beth Orton album, and also I definitely need Cat Power's Moon Pix. So that's something to aim for.

[mp3]

After I had downloaded 5765kb out of the required 6032kb of the Seal song Crazy, I was informed that more sources were needed for download. This was especially frustrating given that all my downloading is done via a modem, and I had already waited around 40mins. I'm sure everyone who downloads pirated music has had this experience at one time or another.

I was talking to Deb last night and we both agreed that actually we weren't really interested in downloading mp3s anymore. We want to own CDs. They look good. And there is something nice about having the glossy cover booklet. The issue of paying artists for their work also figures in there somewhere.

That won't stop me from grabbing the odd track off the Net however. I often buy albums after downloading songs from them.

[Bargain basement]

In recent months, a whole host of discount music stores have sprung up around Adelaide. I don't know if it's parallel importing or simply the availability cheap titles, but these shops tend to have an excellent range of CDs at frighteningly low prices. Frightening from the point of view of encouraging impulse buying.

So, today I bought Kate Bush's Hounds of Love and Simon and Garfunkel's Parsely, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. My collection of old folk/strange music is quickly becoming comprehensive. :)
